The aim of this experiment is to find out what melts ice faster. Sand, salt or sugar.
The kids Hatchimals were captured and frozen and Ella had to work out the fastest way to melt the ice to save them using sugar, salt and sand.
She put 3 Hatchimal ice cubes into separate bowls and added a spoonful of sugar to the first bowl, salt to the second and sand to the third.
We then set a timer for 5 mins and she observed any changes. The Ice had not fully melted but the one with salt was a clear leader.
We kept setting the timer in 5 minute intervals, observing each time until the first Hatchimal which was in the salt was free.
The salt melted the ice fastest as it lowers the melting point of water. The sugar was the next fastest as like salt, it dissolves in water making a chemical solution that melts the ice.
Sand doesn't dissolve in water like the other two as it has bigger components therefore not meting the ice.
To do:
Freeze water in an ice cube tray.
Lay out bowls with sand, salt and sugar in.
Get your child to try and predict which will melt the ice fastest.
Put 3 ice cubes in separate bowls.
Add a spoonful of sand to the first one, salt the second and sugar the third.
Set a timer for 5 mins and then observe any changes.
Keep checking in 5 minute intervals until the ice cubes have melted and your child can see which has melted the quickest.
